Abarat by Clive Barker review

Abarat is a real gem by the horror master Clive Barker. A modern day fairytale that has equal doses of magic and horror. The hero of the book is Candy Quackenbush, a teenage girl with heterochromia(her eyes are different colours) who is bored out of her mind about everything in her hometown Chickentown, Minnesota. After fighting with a her teacher, she leaves the school wanders to the edge of Chickentown where she sees the remains of a lighthouse which is extremely peculiar since there's no sea anywhere around. There she meets the strangest creature ever, John Mischief, who's pursued by a villain. By a series of weird events, Candy leaves her world and ends up in Abarat that consists of twentyfive islands, each representing/living in a different time of the day.

Magical places, beautiful creatures and bloodfreezing enemies fill this unique masterpiece. One book where you finally like the villain without him being a stud. I highly recommend it to both fairytale and horror lovers, it's a book that will suck you in and you won't be able to easily put it away. A pleasure as a read and as imagery as it is illustrated by Clive Barker himself.

The book has a sequel called Abarat: Days of Magic, Nights of War, and will possibly be followed by three more.

Once a headbanger...

My nape hurts ^___^

On Labels

Most people if you ask them will tell you in a heartbeat that they don't like labels, yet, everyone keeps labeling the others. "He is emo", "She is a prep", "Those are posers" etc. I must admit that I also label stuff. I label kitsch people, goth people, trendy people, I do it all the time and when I come to labeling myself I fail horribly. See, I went to a metal concert tonight. It was awesome and it's been three years since the last time I've been in one and I found myself getting into the forsaken track of the "metal chick ensemble". Black nail polish, smoky makeup, rings on all my fingers and boots. I might as well call myself a metalhead for the next few days but I know that in the first notes of "Suzie Q" I'll turn into a classic rocker that wants to shake, shake, shake. I know that I'll dive into Steampunk the next time I see a bodice or a cog. I know I will eventually return to the gothic dress style or an attempted goth style anyway since I can't afford "original" gothic clothes *cough*.

So what am I? When people ask me what kind of music I like I feel lost. I like, well, everything of quality. Greek people would understand which music genre I mean but there's that single one that I despise and I can't even listen to it if paid. I like gothic music but I also like metal, rock, industrial and steampunk music. It's a matter of time before I find yet another labeled genre to become a fan of. I don't even know why I am writing all of these, my feet hurt and it's late :)

PS- Clue of the night, Daniel asking us "Are you OK?" three times until we answered yes extremely loudly and then a person from the audience also asking "Are you OK?" Johan saying "Fuck yeah" loudly and Daniel wondering if we asked him "Are you gay" ROFLMAO
